The Drakensbergkloof G ame and Trout farm between Memel in the Free State and Newcastle in Kwazulu Natal is certainly one of the most beautiful nature, birding and fly-fishing destinations in the world. The farm nestles high in the foothills of Drakensberg mountain range in a spectacular gorge with majestic cliffs reaching to the sky, numerous waterfalls, beautiful indigenous trees, various game species and spectacular vistas (often only when the morning mist clears into a storybook dream) The narrow dirt road climbs and winds up and down the mountainside for almost 2,5 km along streams, cliffs and waterfalls to the thatched 4-bedroomed chalet alongside a beautiful dam high in the mountain. The setting is perfect and idyllic against the backdrop of a seasonal waterfall. The spacious sundeck-jetty offers care-free relaxation, birding and fly-fishing. (Fingerlings are reared in a dam at the main farmstead) Game Viewing. Guests will spot various game species on the drive to the chalet. The dam and cliffs make for excellent birding and a large variety of feathered friends will be spotted from the chalet and sundeck. Fish Eagles and various other birds of prey will be spotted from time to time. A series of hiking trails were laid out beginning at the chalet. The more adventurous are welcome to explore the whole area at own peril. The farm has beautiful indigenous trees and is frequently visited by experts in the field. Visit the world-renowned Seekoeivlei Wetlands at Memel. The 2000 ha Seekoeivlei Wetlands (listed as a Wetland of International Importance (RAMSAR) )offers an estimated 350 bird species including many 'specials' and 15 Red Data listed species.
